The work is included among the Italian strategic infrastructures identified by no. 121 Ministerial Committee for Economic Programming decision of 21/12/2001 – The so called: 1st Program of strategic infrastructures. 

The project was established within the “General Framework Agreement – Road Infrastructure Plan Agreement for the Region Calabria” drawn up by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry for Environment and Territory and Sea and the Region of Calabria on May 16th 2002, including the completion of E90 Jonic Highway (Lecce – Taranto – Sibari – Reggio Calabria).

 

The NR 106 “Jonica” is one of the most important road axis of Southern Italy running from the South to the North of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia along the Ionian coast. Together with the NR 280 “Dei Due Mari” (running East-West), the NR 106 “Jonica” is the main road system linking all the municipalities of the Ionian coast to the Tyrrhenian coast and its transport network, such as: the A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria Highway, the Napoli-Reggio Calabria Railway Line, the Lamezia Terme Airport and the Gioia Tauro Port.

 

MEGALOT 1: DG22- Modernization in the new roadway of the national road 106 “Jonica" - Section Palizzi (Km 50+000) – Caulonia (Km 123+800) VI-VII-VIII Lots: Sant’Ilario – interchange of. Marina di G. Jonica “Megalotto 1” (DG 22/04)

These works involve modernising between Sant'Illario and Marina di Gioiosa Jonica intersection, over a total length of 17 km. The project of this section is broken down into three lots (6th, 7th, and 8th).

Almost all the areas affected by the construction of tunnels and viaducts are outside built up areas, and so their effect on these settlements is limited to a few scattered buildings, for which steps are to be taken to protect them during the construction works.

 

MEGALOT 2: DG21- Construction of the “Megalotto 2” of the national road 106 “Jonica" - Section Squillace interchange - Simeri Crichi interchange and of the extension of the national road 280 “dei due mari” from S. Sinato interchange to Germaneto interchange

Jonica alignment runs through hill areas, varying between 200 and 800m of height that required the construction of several structures, such as 10 bridges and viaducts. The length of tunnel sections compared to open-air sections is approximately 50% of the entire alignment of 17+200 km.

The entire roadway has been divided into three functional sections, Lot A, Lot B and Lot C, to optimize the management of construction works.

MEGALOT 3: DG41 – Preliminary and Final design of “Megalotto 3” of the national road 106 “Jonica", from the interchange to S.S. 534 (km 365+150) to Roseto Capo Spulico (km 400+000)

The road starts from the interchange with the SS 534, in the area of Sibari, up to Roseto Capo Spulico for a length of 22.2 Km. It is one of the key elements for the transformation of the Ionic Corridor project in road infrastructure of great communication.

The services are related to the upgrade of the infrastructures in urban, half urban and rural areas of Calabria Region with the aim of improving the road network conditions in terms of safety and accessibility to the area.
